Enrolment in the Serbian Language and Literature Study Programme

Before candidates can enrol in this study programme, they are required to take an entrance examination. The entrance examination for the Serbian Language and Literature Study Programme consists of two parts, a linguistic test and a literature test. Both tests are weighted an equal number of points (twenty-five). Preceding the entrance examination, the Faculty of Philology organises preparatory classes over a period of two days, in which the teaching assistants working at the Serbian Department do exercises with candidates and cover the topics to be tested in the exam.

What are the employment opportunities for Serbian Language and Literature graduates?

After completing the first-cycle study programme at this department, students are awarded the academic title of Serbian Language and Literature Teacher. The programme has been designed to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for the job of Serbian language and literature teacher in primary and secondary school, for working as a copyeditor/proofreader, and for doing a wide range of jobs in cultural and public information institutions (as librarians, journalists, editors in publishing houses, literary critics, cultural scholars, etc.).

Also, Serbian language and literature graduates can further pursue their education by entering our second-cycle study programme (master programme), which lasts one year (two terms) and ends with students writing and defending a master thesis. Upon completing the master programme, students are awarded the academic title of Master of the Serbian Language and Literature. Master degree holders can enrol in the third-cycle study programme (doctoral studies), where they can choose between Language Sciences and Literary Sciences, both offered in the field of Philology. The doctoral programme takes three academic years to complete (six terms), and at the last stage, candidates write and defend a doctoral dissertation.

What are the pros of studying the Serbian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philology in Banja Luka?

This study programme offers students a thorough knowledge of not only the development and current state of the Serbian language and literature, but also of Serbian culture in general. The approach taken by the professors and teaching assistants working at the Serbian Department is meant to ensure the different areas and topics included in the curriculum are presented to students in a clear, comprehensible and approachable way, and the communication with them is consistently study-oriented and effective, whether during contact hours, office hours, or by means of electronic correspondence. They also aim to inform and provide students with all the literature they need to meet their pre-exam and exam requirements, stimulate their active classroom participation, both during lectures and small-group discussion sessions, and train them to become able to carry out student research independently.

We believe the Serbian Language and Literature Study Programme is the right choice for those who seek to study in depth the lives and works of major local and foreign writers, understand the principles underlying both literature and literary study, by participating in discussions, exchanging opinions and studying set and additional texts, and develop their ability to appraise texts critically. It must be the choice of those who wish to acquire the knowledge of the mechanisms and rules underlying the development and system of the Serbian language, learn about the different ways in which linguistic phenomena can be observed and studied, and build a good foundation for understanding the culture of Serbian people, by learning about their language and literature.

Student exchange programmes

The Department of the Serbian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Philology has signed collaboration agreements with several European universities, namely, the Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv (Bulgaria), the University of Wrocław (Poland), the University of Gdańsk (Poland), and the West University of Timişoara (Romania).

Thanks to these collaboration agreements, students of the Serbian language and literature are eligible for study visits to Slavic departments at the stated universities. These visits can last between one month and one term, during which students have the opportunity to learn about the work of Slavic departments and chairs at foreign universities also offering Serbian philology. These trips are a chance for Serbian undergraduates to learn the language of the host country and get to know the country itself, with a focus on its geography, culture and art.

Full-time students of the Serbian language and literature can spend between one term and one academic year at a foreign university with the financial assistance of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska, which runs several co-funding programmes with the aim of supporting international exchange visits of faculty and students of the Republic of Srpska public higher education institutions.
